Common Questions: Coffee & Christ

Thinking about joining us? It's normal to have questions. Here are some of the most common ones we hear. If yours isn't answered here, please don't hesitate to send us a text or email us.

The Basics: What Is This?

Q: What exactly is Coffee & Christ?

A: Coffee & Christ is a weekly, informal gathering for people exploring faith in a safe, non-judgmental space. It’s not a traditional church service with a sermon or singing. Think of it more as a conversation among friends over coffee, where we discuss life, faith, doubts, and offer support to one another. It’s less about doctrine and more about how we live and support each other.

Q: When and where does it meet?

A: We meet every Sunday morning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The B&G Spot, located at 438 Market St, Sunbury, PA 17801. Free and easy parking is available in the lot behind the building (accessible from the rear by Burger King).

Q: What kind of topics do you discuss?

A: Conversations are often about what's happening in our lives. We might explore themes like forgiveness, anxiety, hope, or grace. Sometimes we discuss a piece of scripture to find its relevance for our lives today. The path of the conversation is always open, allowing it to go wherever the group needs it to.

Q: Do you ever read the Bible?

A: Sometimes, but not always.  It's to explore its stories and teachings conversationally, not authoritatively. We focus on messages of love, justice, and compassion. You are never required to read along or believe a certain way about it.

Q: Is Coffee & Christ part of a specific denomination?

A: No, we are proudly non-denominational. Our focus is on the core principles of love, grace, and service that transcend denominational labels. Everyone is welcome.

Q: How often do I need to come? Is this a commitment?

A: There is no commitment or membership required. Come as often as you feel you need it - that could be every week, once a month, or whenever you need support. You are welcome on your own terms.

Belonging: Who Is It For & Is It For Me?

Q: I'm not a Christian/I'm not sure what I believe. Am I still welcome? A: Absolutely, yes. You are welcome here. Many people in our group are exploring, questioning, or come from different spiritual backgrounds (or none at all). Your beliefs (or lack thereof) are respected.

Q: I am LGBTQ+. Will I be truly accepted?

A: Yes, without exception. We actively, proudly, and affirmingly welcome the LGBTQ+ community. Your identity is a sacred gift from God, never a barrier to grace or participation. This is a core value of our ministry.

Q: I'm transgender/non-binary. How do you handle pronouns and names?

A: We will always use your chosen name and your pronouns. You are welcome to share them with us, and we will make every effort to respect them. It's okay to correct us if we make a mistake; we are always learning.

Q: I have much trauma from past church experiences. How do you handle triggers?

A: Your well-being is our priority. We foster a gentle environment and avoid harmful or triggering church jargon. You are always in control of how much you participate. If a topic ever becomes uncomfortable, you are free to step away without question.

Q: What are your core beliefs?

A: Our beliefs are centered on the radical, inclusive love taught by Jesus. We believe in a God of grace, not condemnation. We believe every person is a beloved child of God. For example, we believe that 'Love your neighbor as yourself' is a call to active inclusion and advocacy, not just passive kindness. We prioritize people over dogma.

Q: Is everything we talk about confidential?

A: Yes. What is shared in the group stays in the group. We are a safe container for personal stories, questions, and struggles. This is a core rule for us and essential to building trust.

Q: Is this a church? Will I be asked for money?

A: We are a small, informal faith community, not a formal church. There is no collection plate, and you will never be asked for money. This is a free gathering. The ministry covers our costs.

Q: Is there an age limit? Is this just for young people?

A: There is no age limit! We welcome adults of all ages, from college students to seniors. Diversity in age and life experience makes our conversations richer.

Your First Time: Nervousness & Participation

Q: I'm really nervous to come for the first time.

A: That is completely normal and okay! To make it easier, we encourage you to text or email me beforehand. I can answer questions and personally meet you at the door. You can also just show up and say, 'I'm new and just checking it out.' That’s all you need to do. You'll be welcomed warmly.

Q: Do I have to talk or share?

A: Not at all. You are 100% welcome to come, have a coffee, and listen. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Participation is always your choice.

Q: The group ends with a prayer? What is that like?

A: Our closing is always optional and inclusive. It's typically a moment of quiet reflection or a simple hope for peace and strength for the week ahead. It is never a performative or pressured experience. You are free to participate in silence or observe.

Q: What if I disagree with something that is said?

A: Disagreement is welcome! We believe growth happens through respectful dialogue. The only rule is that we listen to understand each other, rather than debating or trying to win an argument. We can disagree and still be in community together.

Q: Can I bring a friend?

A: Please do! Bringing a friend is a great way to feel more comfortable. Everyone is welcome.

Q: Do people usually hang out before or after?

A: People often linger for a few minutes after to continue a conversation one-on-one. There's no pressure, but you are welcome to stay and chat.

Practical Details

Q: What should I wear?

A: Wear whatever you want. Jeans, t-shirts, shorts—it’s all good. There is absolutely no dress code. Just be comfortable.

Q: What is the space like? Is it wheelchair accessible?

A: The B&G Spot is located on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible. Please let us know if you have any specific accessibility needs, and we will do our best to meet them.

Q: Are children welcome to come?

A: Yes! We welcome families. While the adults enjoy "Coffee & Christ," we have a parallel gathering for kids called "Cookies & Christ." They enjoy a snack, a brief children's message, and we read faith-based books that focus on valuable lessons, such as kindness, courage, and love.

Q: What COVID precautions do you take?

A: We respect individual choices. The space is well-ventilated, and hand sanitizer is available. Please feel free to wear a mask if it makes you more comfortable.

Q: Who leads the group if Pastor Corinne isn't there?

A: Pastor Corinne facilitates the group and is present almost every week. On the rare occasion she is unavailable, a trusted spiritual advisor (Betty Davis) will step in to host the conversation, ensuring the group still has a warm and welcoming guide.

Q: What does "Cookies & Christ" mean?

A: This is the name of our children's group! The acronym reminds us of a beautiful lesson: Christ Offers Overwhelming Kindness In Every Situation

Q: What does "Coffee & Christ" mean?

A: This is the name of our adult group. The acronym reflects our core mission of radical welcome: Christ Offers Friendship & Forgiveness Every Day, Everywhere.
